The universe of the Mythos is a nihilistic one in which the players are utterly insignificant. At it's core, CoC is a game about atmosphere, plot, and futility. Combat is deadly and not meant to be balanced, the players are at the disadvantage and there are many things that they simply cannot fight.

'Winning' often times means just surviving, and usually just delays the inevitable. Your PCs are not the Heroes, in many ways they are the Victims. Call of Cthulhu is in many ways fundamentally different than Pathfinder/D&D in how you engage with it. In terms of advice for new Keepers, here's something I wrote up for another person asking for the same:Ī word of advice, since I made a similar transition from Pathfinder/D&D to CoC many years ago. But don't forget that characters do die and die often in CoC. And you're right, players that make their own characters have a better bond with them. So long as the math all stays the same I don't see a problem. Named, Background, even swapping skills around. A good compromise would be to allow your players to customize the details of their pregen. Character generation is MASSIVELY more simple than D&D, but still takes a little getting used to. Likewise for your first scenario, especially for 'The Haunting,' the pregen characters would probably be fine.

If you find that CoC is the game for you, I'd recommend looking to getting the 7th ed rulebooks. That said, the conversion between 6th and 7th edition is very quick and easy, so if you're just starting out you probably don't need to worry. I would say run with the 7th edition quickstart rules for now, as they are more streamlined and contains a number of quality of life improvements and simplifications in terms of rules and game mechanics.
